Narration and Framing in the Media Coverage of Trump’s Plan in Gaza: A Comparative Study between Al Jazeera Net and CNN in Arabic websites (Arabic)

Issue 40, Summer/Fall 2025

The study aims to analyze narration and framing in the coverage by two websites—Al Jazeera Net and CNN in Arabic—of Trump's plan regarding the halt of the war on Gaza, and to trace the transformations in coverage before and after Hamas’s approval of the plan. The study adopts a comparative analytical approach combining quantitative and qualitative analysis to uncover lexical diversity, linguistic patterns, word collocations, and the structure of narrative and framing in the coverage. It employs Voyant Tools in quantitative textual analysis, alongside qualitative analysis in extracting frames and narratives. The sample comprises 173 news items published between September 30 and October 5, 2025. The results show a clear divergence between the two websites prior to Hamas’s approval of the plan: Al Jazeera adopts a critical, cautionary narrative that portrays the plan as an instrument of American-Israeli hegemony, presents the Hamas movement as a victim, and interprets the plan within the framework of broad interests and alliances. In contrast, CNN adopts a propagandistic political narrative that presents the plan as a path to peace. The discourse of both websites shifts after Hamas’s approval of the plan: Al Jazeera adopts a more pragmatic political narrative that focuses on political engagement with the plan, while CNN focuses on the diplomatic-negotiation frame, adopting a narrative of international support for the plan and presenting it as an American diplomatic success, while highlighting the humanitarian dimension and softening the tone of its discourse.
